SALO House
The mid-century ‘white house’ has stood modestly on Captain Cook Crescent since 1953. Designed by Kenneth Oliphant towards the later part of his long career, it had remained an intact example of his work. In 2016, the property was sold for only the second time to a young family who immediately recognised the home's provenance required a sympathetic extension to restore a significant example of Canberra’s suburban heritage.
The design maintains the existing exterior façade and layout of the front rooms. Beyond is where the home gently steps into the modern age with an open plan kitchen, meals and family space that leads onto a covered outdoor terrace.
The home was subtly extended with three new bedrooms to take advantage of the north facing, private and verdant backyard and minimise street noise. A covered outdoor terrace provides summer shade and year round outdoor enjoyment overlooking a magnificent Chinese Elm.
