Merici College
Thursday Architecture were engaged by the College to commence design works as part of the campus masterplan. The brief included three major areas of refurbishment, including refurbishing the science building, school theatre and Limestone Avenue façade works.
The science building consisted of nine classrooms and associated staff rooms and amenities which undertook an extensive refurbishment including new active joinery, new glazed sliding entry doors and finishes throughout. The entire block was re-glazed with high performance windows to improve thermal efficiency.
The school theatre was carefully refurbished, with new finish treatments chosen to compliment the existing feature ceiling. A new bio box was installed at the rear of the theatre that was finished in timber detail battens to compliment the original ceiling. A new operable stage floor was built to connect three levels, basement storage, theatre seating floor and stage floor.
The Limestone Avenue façade was upgraded on a modest budget with a brief to provide maximum design impact. New steel awnings were installed that included trellis wire to allow climbing landscaping to grow over the 60’s monotonous façade. Plate steel with laser cut school emblems were installed on selective parts of the façade to provide school character and animation to the streetscape when viewed at night.
Thursday Architecture were the lead design architect, with Pelle Architects providing documentation assistance during design development.
